Abstract

SUMMARY: The sodium and potassium contents of cells of 32 strains of non-halophilic bacteria were determined after growth in a standard medium of low salt content. The salt tolerance of each strain was assessed by determining the lowest water activity at which growth occurred in sodium chloride medium. Among the strains examined the potassium contents varied about fivefold and were positively correlated with salt tolerance.
