Abstract

SUMMARY A -1,3 glucanase-producing, thermophilic Streptomyces species was grown successfully in a chemically defined medium. Enzyme synthesis was semi-con stitu- tive and subject to catabolite repression by metabolizable carbon substrates; it was inducible by gentiobiose, a molecule structurally unlike its substrate. The enzyme was truly extracellular. Maximum batch production of the glucanase was obtained by adding the inducer late in the fermentation.
