Abstract

The overall rate of reductive pyrimidine degradation in R10 was limited during growth with an excess of uracil as sole exogenous nitrogen source. -Ureidopropionase was the rate-limiting step in the degradative pathway. The synthesis of this enzyme was repressed by ammonia, which accumulated during uracil degradation, while dihydrouracil dehydrogenase was induced in the presence of its substrate. It is postulated that -ureidopropionase may not be specific for reductive pyrimidine degradation.
