Abstract

SUMMARY: The DNA of certain species of halophilic and methanogenic archaebacteria is methylated, as shown by restriction endonuclease sensitivities. The Dam phenotype appears to be confined to particular taxonomic groupings defined by DNA:rRNA hybridization or 16S RNA oligonucleotide cataloguing.
