Abstract

SUMMARY: A comparative study of 50 strains of and 165 strains of showed that the two genera could be easily and rapidly differentiated by the use of four criteria; these were: () production of acid on ethanol + CaCO agar plates, () oxidation of calcium lactate to carbonate, () production and accumulation of dihydroxyacetone in glycerol media, () growth at (initial) pH 4·5. was positive with (), () and (), but negative with (); was positive only with (). Liquefaction of gelatin and production of a greenish yellow fluorescent pigment, being variable with and absent from , were useful only when positive.
