Abstract

SUMMARY: Allen, Stephens, Jaffe & Wakelam (1959) isolated a lactobacillus which they found to require a growth factor present in malt distillers’ dried solubles. We have identified the organism as belonging to the subgroup Thermobacterium Orla-Jensen. It was grown through many serial passages in a chemically defined medium containing thymidine, and had no residual indispensable requirement for unidentified nutrients.
