Abstract

Summary: Metronidazole (1-hydroxyethyl-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole) inhibited the evolution of hydrogen gas in before it inhibited carbon dioxide evolution. Evidence is presented that the phosphoroclastic reaction of the clostridial type was the major mechanism by which both gases were evolved, and it is postulated that metronidazole inhibits, directly or indirectly, the hydrogenase component of the system. A possible mechanism of action is discussed.
