Abstract

SUMMARY: Twenty-six non-flagellate and two paralysed mutants of strain 13 were investigated by transduction with phage 34.13. Abortive transduction divided mutants into eight complementation groups () while the mutants formed one group. Intracistronic and non-reciprocal complementation was found in certain complementation groups. With the exception of which could not be mapped, all genes were linked to each other and to the gene. A genetic map of and mot mutations was constructed. Representatives of the eight mutant groups did not elicit flagellar antibodies in rabbits and are probably unable to synthesize flagellin.
