Abstract

Summary: Nitrate reductase () and mutants of with plasmids carrying nitrogen fixation () genes reduced acetylene independently of added molybdate, but mutants showed pleiotropic dependence on the concentration of added molybdate for expression of both and No complementation of mutations by occurred; nitrite but not nitrate repressed in hosts. Derepression of occurred in molybdenum-deficient () strains since nitrogenase peptides were present. mutants, thought to have a lesion in the pathway of molybdenum to nitrogenase, as well as deletion mutants, had normal nitrate reductase activity.
